New Controls

  • Siemens PLC
  • New 10″ touchscreen, which allows saving recipes. STC 27 has a 15-inch touchscreen.
  • Linear scale on the hydraulic cylinder

This scale is used to calculate the IPM and can also be used in the auto cycle to cut to a position. The auto cycle also allows cutting using the limit switches (original method). Feed rate and time to cut are displayed in the Status area on the screen.

Ethernet Connection – The machine features an industrial Ethernet hub built in, allowing connection to the PLC and touchscreen via Ethernet. This allows for downloading recipes, along with other functions, via a standard Ethernet connection. The Ethernet connection on the operator panel is IP67 rated.

  • Light Tower
  • A 3 HP AC motor is mounted on the spindle, driven by a Siemens inverter.
  • New Stepper motor and amplifier.
  • The inverter and stepper communicate over a ProfiNet interface, allowing the display of numerous functions on the screen.
  • New Oiler
  • Software

The software incorporates all the functionality of the original controls, along with some additional features. You can tell the index to go home, move to a position from home “absolute”, or a position based on the current position “relative”. All functions needed to operate the machine in Auto are displayed on the auto screen; you don’t have to jump between various screens to get the machine to function.

  • Passwords
  • The status screen displays items such as cycle time, number of cuts per blade, and lifetime cuts.
  • Index Absolute
  • Index Relative
  • Index Home
  • Zero and Span of the linear scale.
  • Inputs
  • Outputs
  • Analog Channels
  • Alarms

The machines all have a 4-position (joystick) that allows positioning the head and index, and saving this position in the auto cycle recipe. Easy setup and repeatable.

Mechanical – The machine was thoroughly inspected, cleaned, painted, and the bearings were replaced. The coolant valves were replaced with new ones. There is an IP67-rated outlet for the coolant pump on the side of the machine.

Documentation – Electrical and Mechanical changes, along with the control, have been documented and are available.

Blade Deflection Sensor – Measures the blade deflection while cutting. This unit operates similarly to the old STC DynaTrack.
